Brandon, MB (CKLQ) – Matt Calvert has never forgotten where he came from.

That statement rang especially true on Tuesday morning when the Columbus Blue Jacket forward and Brandon native donated a cheque for $50,216 to the Brandon Regional Health Centre’s Palliative Care Unit.

The funds were raised through the first Annual “Matt Calvert Charity Shootout” Golf Tournament.

“I’m shocked,” said Calvert when asked about the amount. “I think $30,000 was where we were looking at, but this was a representation of this community and it showed what they can do when you want to raise money for a good cause.”

The tournament quickly sold-out all 144 spots and a number of sponsors came on board to help make it a success.

When it came to finding a suitable charity to give the money to, it was an easy decision.

“My grandpa passed away and one of my best buddies (Kyle Hamm), his mom passed away and they had both spent a lot of time in the palliative care unit,” said Calvert. “We always talked about doing a charity dinner or something but I always wanted to do a golf tournament. We started planning and it took off!”

Board members with the Palliative Care Unit say the funds will primarily be used to furnish the patient rooms with new couches and cots, to make it more accommodating and comfortable for families during their time in the hospital.

The event is expected to carry on as an annual tradition with different charities receiving funds each year.
