It was a hard-hitting, physical and emotional match-up between the Swift Current Broncos and Brandon Wheat Kings on Friday night at the Credit Union i-Plex.
Ty Lewis got things going for Brandon 8:13 into the first period with his 19th of the season before the Broncos replied in fine fashion.
Off a faceoff deep in Wheat Kings territory, Broncos captain Glenn Gawdin won the faceoff directly to the stick of Tyler Steenbergen who deposited his team-leading 28th goal to make it a 1-1 game. Gawdin got himself in the goal scoring action, one-timing his 13th marker 45 seconds later to give the Broncos a 2-1 lead.
Then it was Arizona Coyotes prospect Lane Pederson joining in on the action with an unassisted goal to extend the Bronco advantage 3-1. The three goals scored by Swift Current came in a span of 2:35.
The Broncos were shorthanded six times in the first period but successfully killed of all six Wheat Kings’ power play chances.
Brandon would slowly crawl back into this game as Ty Lewis skated directly to the net from the corner and stuffed it by Broncos goaltender Travis Child to make it a one-goal game late in the second period.
Minutes into the third, Tanner Kaspick potted in his 12th to tie this contest at 3-3. He then followed suit with a short handed tally at the 11:18 mark of the third period to restore Brandon’s lead 4-3.
Lewis took a tripping penalty with less than seven minutes remaining in regulation to send the Broncos back to the power play, but the Wheat Kings spoiled that opportunity as forward Tyler Coulter netted a short handed goal of his own to extend their cushion to 5-3.
The Broncos pulled Travis Child late for the extra attacker and got a goal from Steenbergen to narrow the gap 5-4 but that was all they could mustard as it stood to be the final score.
Shots on goal were 34-33 in favour of Swift Current. The Wheat Kings went 1/7 on the power play while the Broncos finished 1/5 on the man advantage.
The Wheat Kings will return home Saturday to take on Calgary in their first meeting of the season. (7:00 on 880 CKLQ)
